LCoNZ was established in 2004 by AUT University, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Otago as a collaborative framework for achieving library management excellence, specifically to use and develop the best enabling technologies in a collaboration which will enhance the innovative delivery of library and information resources and services to the New Zealand tertiary learning and research community. The aim of LCoNZ is to ensure that New Zealand university students, staff and researchers have access to world class library services. As a result, LCoNZ also plays a part in facilitating the development of new initiatives for managing digital resources and collections. |

LCoNZ is a private company which has been incorporated under the Companies Act 1993, and registered with not-for-profit charitable status.
LCoNZ has four Shareholders, who are also customers of LCoNZ’s services: AUT University, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, and the University of Otago Holdings Ltd.
The LCoNZ Board consists of an independent chairperson and four Directors, each of whom are representatives of a shareholder university, together with up to three independent directors. The Directors bring to the Board a range of library, finance and ICT experience. The Shareholders Participations Agreement also provides for new university shareholders to join LCoNZ and to appoint a director to the Board.
The LCoNZ office in Wellington is managed part-time by a General Manager appointed by the Board, and an additional staff member.
